Seems like everyone is hopping on the Injectable bandwagon, but is it worth it? Botox, cosmetic fillers and other injectable are growing in popularity to target the signs of aging deep beneath the skin. They replace youthful fullness that has slipped away due to age-related fat loss in your face, which leaves you with a sunken face, says Alexes Hazen, MD, associate professor of plastic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center.

An alternative to surgery, injectable are a less-invasive option and takes up way less time. The procedure is done within 15 to 30 minutes with typically zero downtime, meaning you can apply makeup immediately after. It’s perfect for those with hectic schedules and just don’t have the time or cant afford the downtime that comes with surgery.

Fillers come in 5 different formulations.

1. Hyaluronic Acid

This substance occurs naturally in the body and plumps the skin when binded with water, similar to the way a sponge absorbs water. It’s ability to retain moisture in the skin helps to hydrate the skin in the treated region, filling the space between collagen and elastin fibers which helps to enhance the skin’s plumpness. Effects are reversible, so if you are unhappy with the results, your doctor can easily dissolve the hyaluronic acid filler. While you may experience bruising or swelling, allergic reactions are unlikely to happen since the substance is found naturally in the skin. Results last anywhere from 3 to 12 months.

2. Collagen

Collagen is best known to fill in those fine lines and wrinkles. If you didn’t know, collagen is quintessential of your skin’s structure, maintaining moisture and elasticity. Collagen injections help to make up for the loss of collagen that occurs naturally due to aging. Effects however fade the fastest, with results lasting just about 3 to 4 months. This makes them less popular then newer, longer-lasting choices on the market.

3. Hydroxylapatite

Hydroxylapatite, or also known as Radiesse fills in wrinkles and stimulates the production of collagen in the body. It is a mineral-like substance that occurs naturally in human bones, designed to treat moderate to severe wrinkles, like smile lines. It is semi permanent, lasting about 12 to 18 months.

4. Poly-L- lactic Acid

Poly-L- lactic Acid, or also known as Sculptra is designed to add lost volume to the face. The man-made material also helps to stimulate collage production for better skin texture and a more long lasting result. Sculptra is known to be most painful filler, with results lasting anywhere between 18 to 24 months.

5. Fat

Fat injectable are the most invasive of all fillers. Fat from your own thighs, abdomen or stomach can be injected. Results are immediate, but unlike any other fillers, you may experience downtime like swelling and bruising. Another downside is that once you gain weight, the fat will grow in its relocated spot, so this means lasting effects depends on you.
