Be the first to try the hottest 2020 makeup trends! Here’s what the biggest makeup pros and beauty insiders are excited to see this year. While some trends have spilled over and will probably be here forever (like natural-looking, breathable foundation) some of the most popular 2019 trends are on their way out. (Goodbye, blue lipstick.)

2020 Makeup Trends: Eyes

Colourful eyeshadow

“2020 will be the year of colour,” says celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern. Try playing with different eyeshadow shades. For a simple look, just sweep across the entire lid and blend with a fluffy brush — like what she did for Daisy Ridley (aka Rey from the Star Wars sequel trilogy).

For evening, swap out your brown and black eyeshadow for brighter, more intense shades. See what celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge did for French actress Eva Green for her movie premiere.

Makeup tip: Colourful eyeshadow can emphasize dark circles under the eyes, so use a good concealer. To prevent eyeshadow fallout, do your eye makeup and clean up before you do your base.

Pops of neon

Here’s another way to brighten your eye area. Apply bright neon eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eyes. It’s a more minimalist (and more wearable) version of the 2019 neon makeup trend. It’s also a really easy way to make small Asian eyes or monolid eyes a look bigger and more alluring.

Coloured Mascara

You can enhance your eyeshadow with matching coloured eyeshadow for a party, or just use coloured mascara and eyeliner for a more subtle daytime look. To help the colour look more vibrant (and make your lashes look thicker and longer) use a mascara primer.

Makeup tip: Make your own coloured mascara! Get any coloured eyeliner and paint it on an old mascara wand. Or, take a colourless mascara or mascara primer and roll it into makeup pigments.

Dreamy Watercolour Eyes

The retro 1980s makeup trend led to a lot of bold, eye-popping makeup looks, but people are now ready for something softer and more ethereal. Try applying a soft eyeshadow wash around the eyes. Just pat the eyeshadow in, then blend out with a soft and fluffy round-tip brush.

You can change the look just by using a different eyeshadow finish and experimenting with your cheeks and lip. Here, the makeup artist uses a pastel matte eyeshadow and just subtly contoured the cheeks. While pink seems to be the most popular colour for this kind of look, try lilac, a pale green, or coral.

2020 Makeup Trends: Lips

Blurred Lips

While 2018 and 2019 were all about a strong matte lip or the super-glossy lip, there’s been a steady shift towards softer and subtler lipstick looks. There are more nude lipsticks in different shades and finishes, and lip tints that just enhance your natural lip colour and shape.

One of the key 2020 lipstick trends is the blurred lip — and by the way, it’s one of the easiest (and cheapest) to embrace. You don’t have to buy a new lipstick, just change the way you use it. Apply your favourite shade on the center of your lips and then blend it out with your fingers. Check this video tutorial from Bobbi Brown Korea:

Makeup tip: Creamier lipstick formulas are easier to blend out than matte or liquid lipsticks that dry very quickly. One workaround: apply a generous amount of lipbalm before doing your lipstick, which will help melt and spread out the pigments before it sets.

Flushed, Glossy Lips

Celebrity makeup artist Nikki DeRoest, whose clients include Hailey Bieber and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley,  says the 2020 lipstick trends are clearly going towards Your-Lips-But-Better. “The shade vibe is going to be all about sheer nudes and earth tones. And the finish is going to be almost glossy, not sticky or shellacked, with a barely-there balm shine as opposed to matte.”

2020 Makeup Trends: Foundation

Foundation isn’t really something that changes with trends, explains makeup artist Sharon Tulley. “Well-applied foundation never calls attention to itself. It looks like your own skin, and complements the rest of your makeup. Have different textures, or even have two shades that you can blend in case you’re extra pale or got tanned during a vacation. That way, you’re not reacting to a trend, but to what your skin needs.”

That said, here are some foundation tips from pros that are especially important to remember while you play with the 2020 makeup trends.

Switch out different foundations

In terms of picking a formula, she says it’s all about balance. A very shimmery eyeshadow will need a more matte finish, while a daytime natural look will require a base that’s very sheer and lets your skin texture show through.

Get a colour corrector and primer

Since 2020 has a lot of colour, you have to be careful about canceling out any red or blue discolourations in your skin. “Pink eyeshadow will highlight redness, and blue eyeshadow will highlight dark circles. The more colour you have on your face, the more important it is to have an even complexion,” says makeup artist Dan Go.

Since the eyes are taking center stage this season, your eye base makeup is doubly important. Aside from concealer, use a base eyeshadow that matches your skin tone. For the tropical Asian climate, he says that eye primer is a must. “Sweat can cause smudges and caking, and can also affect the intensity and colour of your eyeshadow and eyeliner.”

Use the Pre-Highlight technique

This is the best way to fake a glow! After moisturizer, apply a liquid highlighter on the cheekbones, forehead and nose. “That first layer of glow comes through the foundation and concealer and reads as radiant skin, not makeup,” says celebrity makeup artist Nikki DeRoest.

Get a Water-Based Foundation

Many makeup artists are stocking up on hydrating foundations that plump up the skin and infuse it with youth-enhancing moisture. This looks more natural than piling up a whole lot of highlighters on your face, which can be tricky if you’re in office lighting too. “Rather than highlighting, go for hydrating. Water-based foundations are suitable even for oily skin and are comfortable in hot climates. You also mimic natural, youthful skin and avoid the chalky effect of many glitter-based highlighters,” says makeup artist Annie Vergara.
