The beginning of the year provides a great opportunity to give your skincare regime a complete overhaul. Tons of skin care news articles are telling you to do this and that. Some of these may also be referred to skin care articles from 2017. But if you’re looking for a change, consider updating your skin care routine with these recommendations.

The Magic of Micellar Water

Chances are, you’ve heard of this already. A micellar water skin care formula can make for a great cleansing option if your traditional cleanser just isn’t cutting it anymore. Let’s be real, who has the time to dedicate themselves to a super-lengthy skincare routine when they wake up? The good news is you can cleanse without putting in much effort by using a micellar water. Simply saturate a cotton pad with the micellar water of your choice, then wipe the pad across your skin. It is hydrating and effective at removing surface dirt and oil, micellar water provides a quick way to cleanse your skin in the morning or at night.

Chemical Exfoliator

In essence, exfoliating removes dead skin cells. This improves the texture and appearance of your skin and reduces breakouts. There are two types: AHA, or alpha-hydroxy acids, and BHA, beta-hydroxy acids. The two most popular AHAs are glycolic acid and lactic acid. In cosmetics, BHA refers specifically to salicylic acid, an ingredient you should already know and love if you have pimples. AHAs, on the other hand, are tiny molecules that penetrate the upper layer of your skin and help dislodge and dissolve dead skin cells. They also promote cell regeneration, meaning your skin repairs itself faster and more effectively. Glycolic acid is better at penetrating the skin than lactic acid, but they both do the job. Chemical exfoliators may contain one or both of these, or other AHAs entirely.

SPF for UVB and UVA

UVA rays also play a role in skin cancer formation. In addition, the UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature skin aging changes including wrinkle formation. UVA is around every day; it can even penetrate through window glass. There are approximately 500 times more UVA rays in sunlight than UVB rays. But SPF only measures UVB rays; it doesn’t tell you anything about protection from UVA rays. Therefore, in addition to protecting your skin from the effects of UVB rays, it is also very important to protect from the damaging effects of the more numerous UVA rays.

Alcohol toners are out

While you may think of toners as a skincare product that typically dries out your skin, there are some non-drying, gentle formulas that can help remove makeup and hydrate your skin at the same time. Remove makeup with a non-drying toner. Some traditional makeup remover options may be harsh and too-drying to your skin. Instead of continually drying-out your skin with skin care products formulated with alcohol, consider makeup removers that are free of the ingredient altogether.
