Had one too drinks the night before? Don’t sweat it, cause we’ve been there, one way or another 😂 . Anyway, waking the day can be dreadful, especially with the headache, the nauseous feeling and many others that follow! This is even worse if you’ve already got plans the next day or you’ve already agreed to babysit a kid (We’ve been there, and it wasn’t pretty, trust us 😭). So, Beauty Insider puts together some of the top and proven tips on easing your hangover! (We gotchu boo!)

Drink lots and lots of water 💦

Water is your best friend right now. You should be drinking up to 8 glasses a day no matter your drinking habits. However, most of the headache that comes with a hangover is due to your body being severely dehydrated.

Try a full glass of water with a Panadol if you need it then drink another one an hour later. It might be hard to think about being able to stomach that much liquid if so try flavoured water or a fruit juice. Either way, your body needs fluids if not that headache of yours is not going anywhere!

A big breakfast 🍳

Not the one from Mcdonald’s but if you want it, go for it! Greasy food can actually help you out more than you think. But the most important thing you can do for your body is to line your stomach with good healthy food if you did not already last night.

Retroactively introducing oil into your diet when you’re hungover can be detrimental to the puking experience that is hangovers so try to stomach as much as you can.

Have another drink 😉🍻

This hack is called the “hair of the dog”. Most people swear by this remedy. Some may say its a myth but there are in fact enough evidence to support the fact that having another drink the next morning lessens you hangover.

If you’re puzzled as to why, it is because alcohol changes the way that methanol (a chemical found in alcoholic beverages) is processed in your body. When you drink, methanol is converted into formaldehyde, which is a compound that causes hangover.

Hence, by drinking more alcohol when you have a hangover stops the conversation and prevents the formational of the formaldehyde altogether. If you’re still confused by all that science, all you need to know is, another drink the next morning helps cure a hangover 😂

Coffee or Tea ☕️

Coffee and tea have been proven to be stimulants that improve the fatigue that comes with a hangover. Beverages like coffee, black tea and green tea contain antioxidants that reduces the adverse effects of alcohol consumption.

However, beverages that contain caffeine are diuretics that worsen the effects of dehydration in the body. Also, caffeine does not alter a person’s blood alcohol content, hence, it does not reduce health risks that relates to alcohol consumption.

Supplements 💊

Studies have shown that the consumption of some supplements eases your hangover. Some of the supplements are as below:

  • Red ginseng – Reduces blood alcohol levels
  • Prickly pear – Decreases hangover symptoms
  • Ginger – Combine ginger with brown sugar and tangerine. It stops nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Borage oil – Reduces symptoms of hangover
  • Eleuthero – Studies show how the extract cured hangovers

Antioxidants 🍇

The alcohol you consume causes oxidative stress which leads to your body producing free radicals. Consuming antioxidants will help with this. You may be able to cure your hangover when you consume these foods:

  • berries
  • grapes
  • cherries
  • pomegranates
  • carrots
  • spinach
  • ginger
  • dark chocolate
  • nuts and seeds
  • green and black teas

Pump yourself with electrolytes ⚡️

Electrolyte solutions like sports drinks, energy drinks and bouillon soup are excellent when it comes to replacing the salt and potassium you lose from drinking alcohol. Leading to the fact that it is one of the quickest ways to cure a hangover.

The main function of electrolytes are to conduct electricity in your body, and because alcohol is diuretic (a substance that makes you urine frequently), you tend to be dehydrated when you are hungover, which makes it difficult for your body to flush our the toxins in the alcohol. That leads to the headaches and the nausea you feel when you wake up the next day.

Get some good sleep 💤

It is a myth that a big night out drinking will help you have a good rest. In fact, sleeping when you’re drunk prevents you from entering REM Sleep which is vital to repairing your skin and helping with long term memory recollection.

Definitely try to get a good night’s rest the day after your big drinking episode. Wind down early in the day and keep screens away from your bedroom for optimal sleep patterns. Your body is essentially running on a “nap” and needs all the rest it can get to start your day at a 100%.
