We know that after a long and tiring week of work and having to deal with life itself, a drink or two would be the perfect remedy. However, it comes as no surprise that alcohol would take a toll on your skin in a long run. It is said that heavy drinking can lead to persistent inflammation, fixed redness and broken capillaries.

It gets worse 😭 Alcohol also dehydrates your skin, leaving it feeling dry and tight. Also, as it is usually confused with salt, this then leads to facial puffiness, especially in areas of your eyes that are naturally prone to retaining fluid and swelling.

But mostly, as alcoholic drinks are usually packed with a load of sugar, that causes your insulin level to spike, thus giving you and inflamed skin.

As much as writing this article hurts 😭, Beauty Insider puts together a list of some of the alcoholic drinks that would be bad for your skin.

Tequila

When it comes to Tequila, you may think it’s bad, but trust us, it isn’t as bad as the rest. It contains lesser sugar than most of the other types of alcohols, which means it is less likely to trigger inflammation and breakouts on your skin.

You may want to skip the salt for a lesser chance of having a major hangover. This is mainly because tequila is, in fact, a high-purity spirit and it does not contain congeners of darker spirits like rum or whiskey. Hence, drinking high quantities of tequila will only result in your skin and head suffering 😂😂

Beer

This will come as a shock, but even though beer does contain some salt, it also has some redeeming and miraculous benefits like containing antioxidants and other anti-ageing benefits – I mean, who knew, right?!

Additionally. beer has lesser alcohol compared to the other types of alcohol. Also, as people tend to sip their beer down slowly, it has lesser dehydrating effects compared to other alcohols out there – Time to stock up our beer! 😂

Gin & Tonic or Vodka Tonic

When it comes to Gin and Vodka, both of these alcohols are congeners which means they are less likely to cause your symptoms of a hangover. Also, they also contain lesser amounts of sugar and salt – provided you opt for a diet tonic. In a nutshell, spirits are less unkind to your skin to their cocktail counterparts, which is why most people opt for Gin or Vodka!

White Wine

I bet most of you are definitely familiar with the excruciating and throbbing of a headache that you’ll definitely get caused by a night full of white wine. As bad as it is for your head, it is also not very food for your skin 😂

This is because white wine is extremely high in sugar, which leads to systemic inflammation. Hence, only contributing to cell damage and increased skin ageing. Honestly, white wine has zero redeeming qualities 🤷🏽‍♀️

Mojito

As mentioned about White wines, the consumption of sugar in your diet, with huge amounts of carbs only leads to a bad systemic inflammation. That would then lead to increased skin ageing. Technically, the less sugar you consume in your alcohol, the better it is for your long term wrinkle formations.

However, sadly, most mojitos are loaded with sugar syrup and are often mixed with Red bull, fruit juices or even Coco-Cola. What’s more, is that wrinkles are the least of your worries as you will also notice the increased formation of acne caused by the sugar – We’re sorry, Mojito lovers 😭💔

Margarita

*Gulps* as amazingly delicious a margarita can be, it is actually not very good for your skin 😭 It contains double the amount of sugar and salt you get from other alcohols, which then leads to a puffy face that is usually associated with a hangover. Not to mention, how we talked about how sugar can affect your signs of ageing in a long run.

The lesson we can take away from this is, when life gives you limes, refrain from making margaritas 😭

Red Wine

This is definitely going to come as a shock or a heartbreak to most of you (including me), but the ugly truth is, red wine is one of the worst alcoholic drinks for your skin.

As alcohol is said to be a vasodilator, which means it promotes the opening of blood vessels in the skin, which is how it technically leads to an increase of redness. Red wine is then said to be one of the worst culprits because it is a histamine releaser that promotes redness and flushing.

If you’re one who is prone to getting redness or rosacea, please opt away from red wine 😫
