Frequently Asked Questions on Hair Removal

What are the differences between waxing, sugaring, and laser hair removal?

First up, waxing. Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method, whereby soft and sticky wax is applied to the skin which then adheres to the hairs, and quickly taken off using a strip of waxing cloth or paper to remove the hairs from the skin. On the other hand, sugaring is another temporary hair removal method which uses a paste made of sugar, lemon, and water. The warm paste is then applied to the skin and directly pulls the hair from the root. Thirdly, laser hair removal is when a laser device beams highly concentrated light, which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles, thus destroying the hair.

How long does it take for the hair to grow back?

It generally depends on the individual. Typically, it takes around three to four weeks for the hair to grow back. For sugaring, it usually takes an average of four to six weeks. Laser hair removal is more permanent; people will usually experience the hair falling out after two to four weeks after the first few sessions, and longer periods of time after that. However, maintenance sessions are required, as not all hairs have the same growth cycle, so some hair may not be affected by the laser during the session and will continue to grow.

Does it hurt?

Again, it depends on the individual as everybody has different pain tolerance, and different parts of the body will have different pain sensitivity too. In general however, most people do say that waxing and sugaring hurt, but sugaring hurts less than waxing as the sugar paste only adheres to the hair and not the skin. However after each wax or sugar pull, a calming cream or gel will be applied to sooth the skin. Additionally, laser hair removal uses high-heat laser beams, so mild discomfort may be experienced, like small rubber bands being snapped onto your skin.

Which parts of the body can I do hair removal?

Almost everywhere. You can go to a salon to wax, sugar, or do laser hair removal on your eyebrows, arms, legs, torso, bikini area, even your knuckles! However, you should not do hair removal treatments on any part of the skin that is inflamed, irritated, cut, or sunburnt. Other areas that you should not perform hair removal treatments on are any areas that have skin grafts, acne, cold sores, moles, or warts.

Can men do hair removal at salons?

Absolutely! Some salons are only for women though, so we recommend contacting the salon first.

How long should the hair be when I go in for my session?

For waxing and sugaring types of hair removal, the optimal hair length is around 1/4th of an inch, or as short as 1/8th of an inch, which is typically around 10 days of hair growth. For laser hair removal, it’s best if the hair is shaved the day of your session.

Is there anything to avoid before the hair removal session?

If you’re going in for a waxing session, exfoliate either with a physical or chemical exfoliant 48 hours before the session. However if you’re planning to do a sugaring session, don’t exfoliate for 48 hours prior to the session. If you’re undergoing laser hair removal, try not to wax, sugar, pluck, or remove the hair from the root for six weeks before the treatment to minimise chances of different hair growth cycles like we’ve previously mentioned. And of course, take a shower before the session for everybody’s comfort.

Is there anything to avoid after the hair removal session?

Yes, to prevent irritation on the skin, it’s best to avoid any activity that could lead to sweating, such as working out, and avoid swimming for 24 hours. Try to avoid being in direct sunlight, and if the hair removal was done on the nether regions, avoid sexual activity for 24 hours to prevent irritation. But remember, redness for a few hours after waxing, sugaring, or laser hair removal is totally normal!
