What Is A Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a form of aesthetic facial treatment that involves topical application of a chemical, acid-based solution to lift away dead skin cells. This skin-resurfacing procedure also helps to treat common skin concerns like discolouration, ageing, and uneven skin pigmentation. A budget-friendly alternative to laser facials, chemical peels are also safer as the treatment does not involve the usage of gritty physical exfoliants that can cause irritation and discomfort.
The treatment, in fact, has been around for centuries. Legend has it that Cleopatra, queen of ancient Egypt, bathed in milk as part of her beauty ritual. Milk is a primitive form of a chemical peel because it contains lactic acid, the active ingredient in breaking down dead skin cells thus allowing the skin to rejuvenate itself more quickly. Today, there are many different types of acid used in chemical peel treatments: The most common ones: Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Phenol and TCA.
What Are The Benefits of Getting A Chemical Peel Treatment?
By using the appropriate concentration of the acid, your skin will enjoy major benefits. One of the biggest pluses of chemical peel is that it can thoroughly cleanse your skin from deep within. Below are some of the perks you can enjoy from chemical peels
- Reduce fine lines, age spots, freckles and dark spots
- Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and ageing
- Improve the appearance of mild scars
- Treat certain types of acne
- Reduce melasma due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills
- Improve the look and feel of skin
What Are The Possible Side Effects of Chemical Peels?
In general, chemical peel treatments are safe and have minimum downtime and side effects. However, that being said different skin has different reactions so the most common side effects of chemical peels are redness, dryness, stinging or burning, and slight swelling. However, these conditions are very mild and temporary and if conditions are worsening, immediately seek a dermatologist!
Here are some simple precautions you can take after your chemical peel treatment:
- Wash your face as usual but use a gentler cleanser.
- Use a moisturising cream prescribed to you by your clinician.
- Do not apply any makeup, medication or acidic product on your skin during the entire time of healing or the skin will become irritated.
- Avoid sun exposure. Use a sunblock every three hours and seek shade wherever possible.
- Do not peel, prick, scrape or scratch the skin.
