What is the Chingay Parade?

The Chingay Parade is a parade involving costume and masquerade. The first Chingay Parade in Singapore was held in the year 1973 as a street parade to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Since then, it has become an annual event that showcases Singapore’s uniquely rich multi-ethnic cultures.

In the parade, the performers put on elaborate costumes from different ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds. Not only that, but they also have full-fledged makeup on to suit their costumes and characters. In addition to that, during the parade, there are huge displays of floats, props, structures and cultural performances from all over the globe.

Chingay Parade 2020

This year’s theme of the parade was “Colours in Harmony”. The event was incredibly beautiful with its showcase of different performances, acts and communities in Singapore. There were more than 5000 volunteer performers that took part in this vibrant parade.

One of the most significant events in the parade this year is that 2020 marks 60 years of the People’s Association of Community Building. Hence, the People’s Association presented a segment on the title “Bridge of Harmoney”. It featured a “Bridge of Harmony” float that was an artistic display of “Harmony” tiles. Those were co-created by the residents from all over the island.
