What is a Facelift?
A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that tightens the loose skin around your face to tackle the signs of ageing. As we age, the collagen and elastin start to deplete on the face and neck, hence, it causes our skin to sag and stretch. Through a facelift, a necessary procedure will be made to deliver younger-looking skin.
What are the Types of Facelifts?
There are two types of facelift procedures, namely surgical and non-surgical/
Surgical Facelifts
A surgical facelift is an invasive cosmetic procedure, in which the doctor will incise and separate the skin and tissue to reposition them.
Mini facelifts
Mini facelift procedure specifically treats sagging skin on the lower part area. This less invasive procedure involves an incision around the ear, therefore it enhances your cheeks and jowl. Moreover, with the mini facelift procedure, the scar is far shorter and you will be given local or general anaesthesia during the procedure.
Standard facelifts
Standard facelift or also known as a full facelift is usually performed on the face or neck to treat moderate and severe cases of sagging. The procedure involves a more extensive incision compared to a mini facelift.
Non-surgical
If you’re not keen on going under the knife, there are several non-surgical options that you can consider.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser Skin Resurfacing is one of the most preferred facelift treatments in Singapore as it helps to brighten the skin and reverse the signs of ageing. The procedure involves removing the top layers of the skin, which your skin will peel and heal within a few weeks.
Threadlift
Threadlift is a procedure in which the doctor will insert Biodegradable polymers into the targeted area to deliver a tightening look. Typically, it is suitable if you want to enhance your jowl, brows, and chin. However, the results will only last a few months as the threads will dissolve about six to nine months after the treatment.
Micro-Needling with Radiofrequency
Next, Micro-needling with Radiofrequency combines two different treatments which are micro-needling and radiofrequency. This non-surgical procedure uses the INFINI device to promote collagen and elastin production. Hence it helps to tighten the skin, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, and reduces scars.
HIFU
HIFU (High intensity-focused ultrasound) is preferred due to its effectiveness in stimulating collagen production with minimal damage to the skin. This non-invasive therapy can deliver results for up to two years. In addition, this treatment involves delivering ultrasound to the skin which penetrates deep into the layers of the skin to stimulate elastin and collagen.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the collagen on the skin, which eventually helps to lift and tighten saggy skin. This treatment is suitable for younger people who seek non-invasive procedures.
Thermage
Another type of radiofrequency treatment is Thermage which is suitable for mild sagging skin. It effectively reduces fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen and elastin production.
Filler
Facial filler which is one of the prominent treatments involves injecting fillers into the targeted area. This treatment helps to plump and lift the area, revealing younger-looking skin. Furthermore, this treatment is quick with zero downtime, making it a suitable procedure during lunchtime. The results can last between nine and 12 months.
Botox
During the botox procedure, the doctor will inject botulinum toxin into the skin to freeze the muscle temporarily. Subsequently, it helps to minimize the signs of ageing in the area. You might notice a significant difference between one to three days and the results usually last up to six months.
Light-emitting diode (LED) Therapy
Light-emitting diode (LED) Therapy is used to treat various types of skin concerns such as acne, wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation. This treatment is preferred due to its minimal downtime and pain-free procedure.

Via minimal incision techniques, a facelift can be performed under local anaesthetic or sedation for individuals who are interested in lifting sagging parts of their face. The fundamental draw of a surgical facelift is its durable results, which allows patients to feel and look good in their own skin for a long time.
For those who prefer something less invasive, ‘liquid facelifts’ using a combination of fillers, neuromodulators (e.g. botox) have traditionally been popular with the advantage of very little downtime. Thread lifts are also routinely performed with minimal pain and with very pleasing results.
For a milder version of a facelift, some energy based devices (eg. laser, plasma, etc) can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatment options.
