Tangled hair can get so annoying. Brushing out the knots can be painful and damage your hair – but who has time to gently and slowly work out the knots early in the morning? You just want to get rid of tangles and get out of the door, fast!

Don’t worry, we’ve got the tricks for those tangles. Find the right products, tools and hair brushing techniques… and the overnight hair treatment that we wish we started doing years ago.

Get the best brush for tangled hair

Hairstylists recommend a paddle brush, a wide tooth comb, or any brush with soft and flexible bristles. Try some of these detangling brushes:

Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler Brush

Buy now: $20, LookFantastic

This brush won an Allure Beauty Award! It has 325 unique bristles that gently and painlessly remove knots and tangles. It was made especially for fragile hair, and you can even use it on wet hair! In fact, you can even use it in the shower to distribute shampoo, conditioner and hair masks.

Ouidad Double Detangler Comb

Buy now: $28, Carousell

This comb has a double row of teeth that can detangle even very thick, textured or curly hair. Best of all, it won’t flatten your hair or cause it to frizz. It removes the knots, but still lets you keep the curls, bounce and volume.

Denman Classic Styling Brush

Buy now: $25.31, Amazon

This all-in-one brush gently removes tangles, minimizes frizz, and can also be used to straighten and style your hair. It’s small enough to fit into your bag, too! We like the very flexible bristles and the slim handle that’s easy to grip and control.

Start from the bottom

Going from roots to tips is painful and more likely to cause split ends. Instead, start at the end and then work your way up. That way, your brush can glide down instead of hitting a knot each time you take a stroke. No more tugging and yanking!

Get a detangling spray

Coloured, permed or mature hair can be more prone to tangling because it’s dry. A moisturizing detangling spray can make it a lot easier to take out those knots, and hydrates your hair at the same time.

Mane N Tail Detangling Spray

Buy now: $15.90, Watsons

Natural herbal extracts soften and smoothen hair, so it’becomes easier to brush and style. It can also minimize the appearance of split ends!

Ouai Leave In Conditioner

Buy now: $39, Sephora

Use this versatile hair spray after a shower to detangle your hair, protect it during heat styling, and reduce frizziness and flyaways. Sephora reviews say that it works even on very curly and unruly hair. “It’s detangling magic!” says one fan.

O&M No Knott Conditioning Detangler

Buy now: $81.53, Amazon

It’s not cheap, but this detangling spray acts like a leave-in hair serum that revitalizes hair. It contains cold-pressed organic argan and macadamia oils, to help strengthen and smoothen your hair. Over time, your hair will feel so naturally silky that you’ll get less knots and tangles.

Get a thermal hair cap

If your hair is really dry and prone to tangling, it’s a sign that it’s very dehydrated and needs regular deep conditioning. Once or twice a week, treat it to this special home treatment. Get a thermal hair cap, which helps you steam your hair (like the pricey salon treatments) at home. It’s safe to use, too: the disposable caps just need to be microwaved for a few seconds.

Just apply any hair treatment (you can even just use extra virgin oil) and slip on the cap. Try LightSmile Conditioning Hair Cap ($24.42, Lazada) or Hamkaw Deep Conditioning Hair Cap ($77 for 10 pieces, DesertCart).

Get a silk pillowcase or silk hair bonnet

The soft, smooth fabric causes less friction when you sleep, so you wake up with less tangles — and less frizz and split ends!

You can either get pretty satin sheets, or a silk hair bonnet — which, in our opinion, is GENIUS. Aside from preventing tangles, hair bonnets are really useful if you want to apply overnight hair masks or hair oils! You don’t have to worry about staining your sheets with all your hair conditioning treatments, and it also helps seal in ingredients and make it work better. Try Vernon Francois Sleep-in Silk Cap, $37, Sephora.
