Hair Masks Are Your Best Friend

Hair masks are like super-charged hair conditioners. In just 20 minutes you can soften hair, add shine, and even prevent split-ends and hairloss. The best part is the ingredients are cheap and you can sneak in a hair treatment while watching Netflix in your pajamas.

DIY Repairing Hair Mask

All you need is coconut oil and honey. Coconut oil can moisturize very dry hair (or those scraggly split ends). It’s also full of fatty acids that can go deeeeep into your hair shaft. In fact, coconut oil penetrates hair strands more than some conditioners!

Honey is a humectant that draws moisture. It also makes your hair smell amazing! Just add a little bit to your coconut oil, heat it briefly in the microwave, and then rub it into your scalp and strands. The best part is that you moisturize your hands at the same time! After you’re done, get half a teaspoon of brown sugar and rub around your fingers to get rid of dry skin and excess cuticles.

Mara has been using this hair mask for over 5 years and says she always gets compliments on her hair. Her tried and tested hair care tips at home: “Wear a hair cap. I feel it ‘traps’ the ingredients and heat better, so it’s like getting a hot oil treatment. I also wash and rinse off with lukewarm water and clarifying shampoo.”

DIY Hair Growth Mask

Aside from these tips on how to make your hair grow faster, you can try home remedies like this cinnamon and coconut oil hair mask.  Coconut oil nourishes your scalp and your hair to promote growth and prevent hair fall. Cinnamon has natural bacteria-fighting properties that fight scalp infections. It also stimulates scalp circulation! Longer, stronger hair – “hair” we come!

All you need to do is mix a tablespoon of coconut oil with a teaspoon of cinnamon. With a comb, part your hair in the center. Then, massage your DIY hair mask into your scalp and work your way down each section of your hair.

Cover your hair with a hair cap or towel and leave this on for at least half an hour (but we recommend 40 to 50 minutes). Hmm, that’s just about the length of a kdrama episode. Yay, it’s an excuse to sit down and TV!

DIY Detox Mask for Oily/Greasy Hair

Lemon’s a staple ingredient in many beauty home remedies. It’s anti-bacterial, contains Vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant and skin brightener!) and is a powerful acid that can break down both dead skin cells and hair oil build-up. Lemon also contains a compound called limonene which is so effective for giving lifeless hair more bounce and shine!

This DIY hair mask for oily hair combines  lemon with eggs. As the lemon removes the grease and gives shine, the eggs add much-needed proteins and fatty acids. That’s because lemon can be drying, so you need moisture and the nutrients that will make your hair softer from inside out.

All you need is 1 egg and the juice of half a lemon. You need to apply this to damp hair.  Since it can get a bit goopy – this is egg, after all – protect your clothes with an old towel. “I like to do this in the shower, on days when I plan to do a body scrub or foot scrub, or shave my legs,” says Amy, who says this is one of her favourite hair care tips at home. “Sometimes I save some of the egg white for a face mask. It’s really good for clearing out pores.”

DIY Hair Mask for Fighting Hair Loss

Coconut milk is full of Vitamin E and healthy fats that can rescue dry hair and stimulate scalp circulation. If you’ve been getting a lot of split ends and hair fall, then just add half a cup of coconut milk to a beaten egg and a squeeze of lemon. If your hair is really dry, you can also add a little bit of extra virgin olive oil.

Many Asians keep coconut milk in their pantry for curries and laksa. Since a recipe rarely calls for a whole carton or can, just save some whenever you cook and put it in the freezer. “I like to freeze leftover coconut milk in ice cube trays so I can use it for DIY home remedies or dishes,” says Patricia.

DIY Hair Mask for Dry Itchy Scalp

If you’re always scratching your hair and scalp, that could be a sign that you’ve got dead skin cells caused by build up from shampoo, conditioner and hair styling products. Just mix extra virgin olive oil with brown sugar and rub it into your scalp. The oil is extra moisturizing and can help prevent dry scalp and split ends, and the brown sugar is a natural exfoliant. By the way, this is also good for dry feet and dry hands too!
