Beta hydroxy acids or BHA is categorized into several different variants salicylic acid, tropic acid, trethocanic acid and beta-hydroxybutanoic acid. Unlike other acids, Beta hydroxy acids can penetrate deeply into the layers of the skin as they are oil soluble. Thereby, they are highly effective for those with oily or even acne-prone skin.
Although BHA is a lesser known acid, previous research has shown that it is more effective than AHA to minimize the signs of ageing and smooth out the skin.
Products with BHA can be used on a daily basis unless stated otherwise. However, make sure to not overuse the ingredient to avoid any potential side effects. When you’re using products that are formulated with BHA, avoid using it together with other active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C as it can cause more breakouts and irritation.
It is perfect for those with acne-prone and sensitive skin
