One of the most memorable movie experiences I had as a child is probably that iconic scene in the Princess Diaries where Anne Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis got her makeover by Paolo! With a smattering of foundation, a smear of colour, a splash of shimmer, and—voila! The spirit of much-needed confidence boosted all over the screen.

And while modern movies are now, understandably, advocates for being yourself and not changing for anyone, there’s just something so satisfying to see when the rom-coms characters from the 90’s and early 2000’s are being entirely transformed—from hair to wardrobes. Don’t get us wrong. We’re all about advocating for body positivity, authenticity and embracing your true self but for the fashion and beauty community like us, these classic makeover scenes were a standing ovation for the costume design, styling and makeup teams.

So without further ado, checkout Beauty Insider’s favourite ‘’Drab To Fab’’ movies of all time!

10 Best Movie Makeovers To Binge Watch!

1. Andy in The Devil Wears Prada

One of the most iconic ugly duckling transformation movies of all time. Andy Sachs played by Anne Hathaway—a smart journalist who accidentally landed a job at a high fashion magazine. Despite being targeted by the brutality of her extremely difficult boss, Miranda Priestly, she finally snapped to make a statement and made one of the best entrances seen on film.

2. Cady in Mean Girls

Okay listen, are you really a 90’s kid if you haven’t watched this movie yet? When Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) changes schools, she is introduced to the harsh realities of high school. Though, once swore to her best-friend that she will never be like one of those plastic, she failed. She ultimately transforms fully to mirroring attitudes just like her foe, Regina George.

3. Gracie in Miss Congeniality

Sandra Bullock plays Gracie Hart, an FBI agent who wears a baggy suit and carries an all-poor etiquette. She accidentally finds herself under a task of undercover as a beauty pageant contestant—and with help of pageant consultant, and much needed waxing, plucking and grooming, Gracie goes from drab to fab in a memorable makeover moment.

4. Vivian in Pretty Woman

We love it, our mothers love it, and we’ll make sure you’ll love it, too! Julia Robert plays a sex worker who accidentally get involved with the rich Richard Gere. After she gets denied service from an upper high class boutique, she comes back strutting with a completely new look. Also, the fashion in this movie is a plus!

5. Mia in The Princess Diaries

Another classic from Anne Hathaway. Mia Therpolis, a frizzy-haired, geeky high school nobody knows, has the ultimate transformation when it is revealed that he is the heir to the throne of Genovia. When Queen Clarisse saw the state of her granddaughter she knew that her granddaughter is in desperate need of refining. So, with the help of the royal team and Paolo, a true princess emerged.

6. Tai in Clueless

Just like the Mean Girls movie, Tai arrived at the Bronson Alcott High School wearing baggy flannels, and a t-shirt that looks like they belong to the men’s department—popular duo Cher and Dionne help to upgrade Tai’s style. Her confidence kicks in after, from there, she has the courage to win the heart of Josh—temporarily, anyway.

7. Jenna in 13 Going 30

Another classic! After a horrid experience on her birthday, the 13-year-old Jenna wishes she could wake up as her 30-years-old self. To which her wish is granted and she wakes up 17 years later. As a child in an adult’s body (now Jennifer Garner), she went on full wardrobe transformations. From the funky 80’s to arrays of designer clothes to fit her part as a successful magazine editor.

8. Olive in Easy A

Emma Stone’s Easy A follows Olive, who becomes the target of false promiscuity rumours at her high school. In order to set the record straight, she makes an entrance to Jessie J’s ‘’Sexy Silk’’, in a stunning frilly corsets with an A stitched on, just like the book of the same name. Can we say: uh-ma-zing.

9. Zeta Alpha Zeta House in The House Bunny

Anna Faris’ character was a former playboy bunny model. She joined a college community ‘’Zeta Alpha Zeta’’, the least famous group in the college. She then straight away turned the whole group into a Fraternity boy’s dream— skimpy outfit, short skirts, makeup and glam hairdo. It’s very enjoyable.

10. Sandy in Grease

Okay, this is an honourable mention. If you love an ever-green movie like me, then Grease should be on top of the list! In 2021, it seems a bit problematic to put out the message that girls have to change their entire demeanor to win over a guy. But the end scene where Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) went from an innocent new student and cheerleader to full-on man-eater is just so satisfying to watch.
