A nose is one of the most distinguishing features of the face. Besides lending symmetry and character to your appearance, the shape of your nose predominantly depends on genetic bone structure and cartilage density. Although everyone’s nose shape is unique, some may prefer a more pronounced bridge to add more definition to the face. Instead of invasive procedures like a full-on rhinoplasty, non-surgical options like nose fillers are now available for those looking to enhance their noses with minimal downtime.

What are nose fillers?

Fillers can help to correct any unevenness on the surface of the nose.

Essentially, nose fillers involve the use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to enhance the shape of one’s nose and correct structural imbalances. These fillers are approved by the US FDA and Singapore Health Sciences Authority for non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Because nose filler procedures only take up to 30 minutes and involve minimal downtime, they are one of the more popular treatments for nose enhancements in Singapore. Moreover, nose fillers are able to give the same results as a rhinoplasty without one actually having to go under the knife.

Nose fillers vs nose thread lifts

An illustration of a nose thread lift (image credit: Mizu Aesthetic Clinic)

Unlike nose fillers, nose thread lifts are considered minimally invasive and involve the use of tiny surgical strings. A nose thread lift involves inserting these strings through the tip of the nose with a surgical needle and advancing it all the way up to the nose bridge. Overall, the results of a nose thread lift lasts for about 18 months and dissolves on its own over time.

But what is the key difference between nose fillers and thread lifts you ask? Nose fillers are suitable for those with naturally flat noses or an uneven nose bridge who are looking for more volume and lift. On the other hand, nose thread lifts are suitable for those with naturally broader noses who want to create a sharper and more contoured appearance.

The procedure

First of all, let’s talk about the fillers. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers come in a soft gel form and can remain in your body for up to 18 months. After this time, the fillers will dissolve naturally into your body. In addition to brands like Radiesse, some of the most common brands for dermal fillers include Juvederm and Sculptra.

Next, let’s talk about the procedure itself. The initial step is the consultation stage. Here, the doctor will help you to identify your goals and address any concerns you may have. When you are ready, the procedure can begin. After disinfecting your nose area, the doctor applies a topical anesthetic to help reduce any potential pain and discomfort. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, the doctor will then proceed with the filler injections via the tip and/or bridge of your nose. This process takes about 10 minutes and the placements of the injections depend on your personal preference and your doctor’s recommendations.

Are there any side effects?

You may experience redness and mild swelling after the procedure.

After the procedure, potential but temporary side effects include mild redness, bruising, swelling and/or soreness around the injection points. Usually, these side effects only last for several hours and the doctor will prescribe some painkillers to alleviate any discomfort.

How long do nose fillers last?

The results for nose fillers usually last up to 18 months. Since the effects are not permanent like a surgical rhinoplasty, you would have to go through the procedure again once your nose has returned to its original shape. And because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, our bodies already have the enzymes we need to break down the fillers naturally over time.

Post-procedure do’s and don’ts

It is best to avoid wearing glasses for the first 4 weeks after treatment.

In addition to following your doctor’s instructions, here are some tips to protect your nose after your procedure:

  • Avoid wearing glasses for the first 4 weeks post-treatment as excessive pressure on the nose can hamper the results of the nose fillers
  • Avoid touching or scratching the nose area
  • Skip vigorous exercises and alcohol on the day of your treatment
  • Apply a cold pack to help alleviate any swelling and discomfort
  • Keep the skin on your nose area clean and avoid any harsh scrubbing on your nose

How much do nose fillers cost?

Nose fillers in Singapore can cost up to $1200 per injection. However, prices differ between clinics and is dependent upon the brand of fillers used, the number of post-treatment consultations required and the experience of the doctors themselves.
