What are Pearly Penile Papules?

Pearly penile papules are asymptotic flesh-coloured bumps that occur at the head and neck of the penis. These benign growths normally appear in three parallel rows around the skin. Although it is a harmless condition, pearly penile papules are often mistaken for genital warts, cancer, fordyce spots and other sexually transmitted diseases. This could not only induce psychological distress to men but their partners as well. Contrary to common belief, pearly penile papules are prevalent among men. It is estimated that 38% of men under 25 years old have them and men above the age of 50 years old constitute 11%. Hence this condition tends to regress as we age. The majority of the uncircumcised men are commonly diagnosed with pearly penile papules with 42% compared to those in another group who have been circumcised as they only recorded about 27%.

Are Pearly Penile Papules Dangerous?

As we have mentioned earlier, they are not harmful in any way or pose life threatening risks. Some people are concerned about this condition, particularly during sexual intercourse. However, pearly penile papules are not contagious or infectious. So treatment is optional but people do opt for PPP laser removal for various personal reasons.

What’s the Difference Between Pearly Penile Papules and Genital Warts?

Due to their appearance, pearly penile papules might be mistaken for genital warts however they are significantly different. Genital warts which are caused by Human Papilloma Virus have lesions that resemble cauliflower-like or rough bumps with dark skin. Since they are contagious, people with this condition should undergo necessary treatment to combat this sexually transmitted disease. Whereas PPP has smaller bumps that appear in parallel rows on the corona of the penis. Additionally, the bumps also do not grow larger and they do not trigger any discomfort or itchiness. Unlike genital warts, PPP is not contagious so you can’t actually transmit it to your partner.

What Causes Pearly Penile Papules?

Unfortunately, the exact causes of PPP are unclear, however, it is observed that men who have not been circumcised are more prone to develop PPP compared to those who are circumcised. Regardless of that, PPP is a condition that does not affect your overall wellness and sexual health.

What are the PPP Laser Removal Procedure like?

During the consultation, the doctor will conduct a physical examination to determine the exact condition and rule out other diagnoses. The PPP laser removal procedure is painless and the treatment takes between 15 minutes and 20 minutes. Prior to the procedure, the doctor will apply a numbing cream and leave it for a few minutes. Next, the laser device will be used to remove the PPP. Once the treatment ends you can resume your daily activities as usual and it only takes around a week for the area to be completely healed. Normally you will only need one treatment to remove the bumps permanently. However, some people might require more than one procedure to remove the remaining PPP.

What are the Benefits of PPP Laser Removal Treatment?

As the PPP laser removal delivers permanent results, it is the go-to treatment for those with pearly penile papules. On top of that, it has zero downtime with no known risks. So, you can easily return to your daily work-life. Although some people experience slight swelling and redness, the recovery period only takes about one week.
