Who is Roseanne Tang?

I started back in high school propping up a small digital camera on two textbooks and a tissue box and filmed my first YouTube video more than a decade ago. Horrible lighting and editing on windows movie maker.

That sparked my journey into makeup, social media, blogging, youtubing and now into education where I teach and run my own Bloom by Roseanne (a personal makeup school where I teach everyday ladies how to apply makeup) and Bloom Pro Academy (a professional hair and makeup academy in Singapore where I teach aspiring hair and makeup artists). I also own my own brush brand called BloomKIT and a YouTube Channel roseannetangrs with over 100k subscribers.

What are my interests and hobbies? I guess I’m really lucky that my interests and hobbies became my career. If I’m not actively teaching, you’ll probably find me making videos and creating content. I have a deep interest in sharing knowledge about makeup and hair to everyday people and aspiring professionals in beauty.

At what age did you start being interested in makeup?

I started probably around 12 with lip smackers lip gloss my friends used to smuggle into school. I remember strawberry and kiwi flavoured ones were my favourite and at that time Body Shop lip balms were considered “makeup”. I would find myself burying into my mum’s makeup collection having no idea why her tinted moisturiser couldn’t cover my spot. One birthday, she gave me a substantial set with eye crayons, eyeshadow and the works – but at that time I had no idea how to even use it. She said I ended up smashing most of it onto my face.

It was only up until senior year I had to get ready for prom and I didn’t know how to apply makeup. I started looking online and watching a very early youtube video by Lauren Luke and trying it on myself. I went to prom that year with white eyeshadow. It was bad.

But it really sparked something in me. My first ever eyeshadow palette was a no name 88 or 78 shadow palettes that I found on a blog shop called My Classy Closet. I started experimenting and it was so fun and interesting. I remember contouring for the first time. I had a sleepover with my friend and we sat in front of the mirror trying to contour our faces. I wish I had Bloom then!

Who are your biggest inspirations and what motivates you the most?

I don’t really have a name for who inspires me but I think inspiration can really be found everywhere and in everyone. I think everyone is trying their hardest and that inspires me. Honestly, my students motivate me the most. I am incredibly thankful for every single person who walks into my studio and I just want them to get to have my very best.

What is the story behind your decision to begin your own makeup school; Bloom Pro Academy?

Bloom Pro Academy is an academy that provides a professional hair and makeup course in Singapore that enables everyday people to become makeup artists. Teaching Bloom Pro is entirely different from teaching Bloom because essentially you are helping someone create a new life. There is so much meaning in this. And for this, I poured my heart and soul into creating a course that was everything I wanted and needed when I was at that particular stage starting out. It is awesome!

My first professional course was in London. I didn’t like how we were in a huge class of 20, that we wasted half a day doing the makeup on each other and we were learning things we wouldn’t really use like face art and special effects. There was little emphasis on hair and it was taught poorly so much that I didn’t even know how to curl hair by the end of it. When I realised this kind of course was happening here in Singapore as well, I had to disrupt it.

At Bloom Pro, I only handle classes either One to One or 2 pax to give them maximum attention and I designed the course so that they will be skilled at both hair and makeup with the most popular trends in Korean and Western makeup. I provide and hire all the models on behalf of my students so they don’t have to worry about bringing a friend or wasting time being the model for their classmates. I don’t require the students to purchase an expensive kit to work with and I provide all the makeup for them to use throughout their course which are of the most popular and current brands. I give them a free brush set, comb set and professional bag and professional bridal photoshoot at the end of their course as well to prepare them for making it a career.

I also had many requests to teach professional courses so I finally made it official!

Have you always wanted to be an educator?

I can’t say I was looking forward to becoming an educator. I went into YouTube which gave me a huge interest in beauty and made me consider becoming a makeup artist and then an educator. But I’m so glad that life just flowed and came this way because I can’t see myself doing anything else.

What is the one makeup tip that has changed your makeup game?

Hydration is the key to flawless makeup and youth. If your base isn’t well hydrated, your makeup will not last and look smooth throughout the day no matter what.

What’s one way that the pandemic has changed or affected your life and business?

Makeup services aren’t allowed in Phase 2 HA so we have had to put a pause to things a few times. But, I’m not too worried as we now have online lessons and it will soon be over. We have been working on some new projects despite the challenges. A few surprises will be coming soon, so stay tuned!

What’s one challenge in your makeup journey that has taught you a valuable lesson?

The key to getting your dreams checked off is to always believe that you can. When I started Bloom, it was in my house’s living room. I had to move furniture back and forth just to make space for class – even the sofas and coffee table. Sometimes students wouldn’t even show, but I never gave up and I always told myself that I would be doing faces everyday and I didn’t see how it was not going to work. When you have a business, it will require you to take leaps of faith all the time and the only thing you need to take a leap is to believe that you can. You could have it all, but most of all, you really have to believe it.

What is the best part about doing what you do; running a Makeup Academy and being a Professional MUA?

The best part is seeing my students grow and learn totally new things because of Bloom and Bloom Pro. That’s really the best. It’s the spark they feel when you’re just mind blown by something that you never knew before. It changes everything!
