Makeup trends are fickle: one day everyone’s talking about this product or look and showing it on Instagram (insert appropriate hashtag here). The next day, they’re saying that it’s passe. “OMG, are you still doing that?”

Well, supposedly these once-hot makeup trends have officially fallen out of favor among beauty influences and insiders. What do you say? Would you still wear it? Did you hate them from the beginning, and are glad they’re on the way out? Tell us what you think — and whatever that opinion may be, just go wear whatever makeup you want. It’s your face, your rules!

Neon Makeup

We’ve been seeing a lot of hot, bright eyeshadows and eyeliners, plus a few over-the-top lipstick colours (slime green, anyone?)

This makeup trend was born out of the 80s revival. From the return of the scunchie hair accessory to Stranger Things, we’re obsessed with that decade.

However, beauty insiders say that while people don’t mind replaying Madonna in Spotify, makeup always tends to swing back to what’s natural and wearable. “Neon makeup is fun, but I think it will fizzle out by mid-fall,” says celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg. So, wear that orange eyeshadow while you can.

Glitter Makeup

We saw a lot of glitter eyeshadows and even lipsticks in 2018 and 2019, but the makeup trend may have lost some of its sparkle. Again, it all boils down to wearability (and practicality. “Glitter requires precise application and plenty of touching up,” says celebrity artist Marc Reagan. It can also highlight fine lines and dry skin, so you have to spend a lot of attention to your base. Basically, it’s not exactly easy glam.

However, you can expect glitter makeup to make period comebacks during the holidays, when most people are in a party mood. But for every day makeup, most people will always turn to subtler ways to shine: luminous skin, sheer eyeshadows, and flushed cheeks.

Heavy brows

Maybe it’s time to revisit your brow game. Instead of super pencilled in, precisely shaped eyebrows, the new makeup trend is veering towards a softer and more natural look. “Everyone is leaving behind the days of extensive tweezing, waxing, and threading to make way for their natural hairs to come back and flourish,” says Reagan.

However, bushy and overgrown eyebrows aren’t going to stay trendy either. “While these did make their appearance on the runways — partially as a backlash to the overshaped brow — this isn’t flattering for most women,” says Greenberg.

The trend is a happy medium of groomed brows with soft definition. Instead of eyebrow pencils or waxes, yuse brow powders or tinted brow gels.
