Some of us still prefer the conventional method of shaving our pubic hair, simply because the process is less painful and excruciating compared to waxing. However, even though shaving sounds simple and easy, if not done right, the results may not be up to satisfaction or you may end up hurting yourself. Hence, Beauty Insider put together 7 tips you should know before shaving your pubic hair! 😉

Pick the right razor

You have to make sure the blades you use are sharp, fresh and replaced monthly. When you use a dull razor, it catches your skin, causes your nicks and also tends to spread bacteria. Not only that, but it is also advised that a multi-blade razor with a flexible head is used for it to glide smoothly along irregular surfaces, like your bikini line.

Single blades razors can be disposed after each use, however, razors that have multiple blades can be used multiple times. However, if you see signs of tugging, rubbing or nicking of the skin, you’d know it’s time to change the razor.

One very recommended razor is the one below. the Gilette Venus Swirl Razor that has five blades and a rotating head that makes it easier for the shaving process.

Right timing

Never ever shave your pubic hair when your skin is dry! Take a shower or a bath and start shaving at the very end when your skin and hair are at their softest state. This is because the warmth of the steam from the shower opens up the hair follicles and makes the hair much more pliable.

Pamper your bikini area

To prevent skin irritation and ingrown hairs, try exfoliating your bikini line before you shave. It is recommended that you cleanse your skin with a loofah or a gentle and hydrating body wash like Cetaphil or Dove as it gently preps and exfoliates your skin before you start shaving. At times, it also helps dislodge early ingrown hairs that may be forming.

After exfoliating, rinse the cleanser or soap off, then use your regular hair conditioner on the hair. This is to soften the hair before you start shaving. One of the recommended product is the Dove Deep Moisture Nourishing Body Was with NutriumMoisture.

Create a barrier

Before you actually start going into the process of shaving, you should apply a hydrating shave cream, body wash, oil or your hair conditioner. Whatever it may be, just be sure to use something! The key to shaving is to use a product that helps with lubrication and provides slop for your razor.

Perfect your angle

Before you start shaving, find a comfortable position for you to stand or sit which makes the shaving process much easier. If you have a tub, it is recommended that you use the ledge of your bathtub to prop your foot up, which gives you better access to the area you are going to shave.

Shave away

Before that, if your pubic hair is extra-long, be sure to trim it with nail scissors to avoid clogging your blade. Back to perfecting the angle, you have to shave against the pattern of your hair growth, as it will give you a smoother shave. However, do note if your skin is sensitive, stick with shaving in the direction of the hair growth. Additionally, an expert suggests using a combination of long and short strokes to reach every tiny strand of hair.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

And now you’re done with the hard part! Yay you! But, you’re not exactly off the hook just yet. After you’ve shaves your pubes, and pat yourself dry with a towel, you should apply a moisturising or hydration lotion that are free from dyes and fragrances. A recommended lotion would be the Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion.
