Facial treatments are a dime a dozen. However, not all facial treatments are created the same. Specifically, those that utilise essential tools to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin renew skin from the inside out. We tried out the internet sensation, red carpet favourite that is the HydraFacial!

What is HydraFacial?

The Hydrafacial machine is a handheld device that uses multiple tips to execute a variety of treatments in less than 60 minutes. The vacuum technology allows the VortexFusion tips to suck sebum, dead skin cells and other impurities from the pores at varying degrees of pressure. Expect to feel zero pain with maximum benefit from the facial treatment.

HydraFacial Technology in Action

The machine detoxifies, exfoliates and purifies the skin. Due to the high pressure of the vacuum, it is able to easily and painlessly dislodge impurities embedded in the skin. Unclogging and softening clogged pores also help to improve overall skin health.

How does HydraFacial work?

Source: HydraFacial UK

The HydraFacial device uses 3 different actions that contribute to the resurfacing of the skin. They are the physical exfoliation from water pressure and a textured tip, chemical exfoliation from acids like salicylic and glycolic and also the suction that lifts the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

The basic treatment begins with a water-based solution being blasted on your skin. This is done to break up the top layer of the dead skin cells. Also, when the spiral suction tip of the HydraFacial device is used, the dead skin cells and the debris on the surface are all cleared away.

The next step is the chemical peel solution. It is delivered in the same manner, only increasing the exfoliation dept. Finally, the final steps to the HydraFacial are to involve the same pressurised delivery of the treatment serums. The serums are tailored to the individual needs of the skin.

Additionally, due to the steps being delivered in a hydrating water-based solution, this HydraFacial provides an adequate amount of plumping hydration to your skin when you compare it to a more traditional microdermabrasion treatment.

What Is a HydraFacial? Benefits, Side Effects, Procedure, and Cost

Who is suitable for HydraFacial?

HydraFacial is suitable for those with:

  • wrinkles & fine lines
  • lacking elasticity and firmness in the skin
  • uneven skin tone
  • uneven skin texture
  • dark spots
  • skin that is oily & congested
  • enlarged pores

How often should I get a HydraFacial treatment?

It is recommended that one receives the treatment in the gaps of 2 weeks to 4 weeks. However, this also depends on the condition of your skin as that would determine how many sessions you would require.

Is the HydraFacial treatment painful?

When you get a HydraFacial treatment done, you will not feel pain as it feels like a cool and gentle suction brush is across your face.

How long does HydraFacial take?

A HydraFacial treatment usually lasts for about 30 – 40 minutes.

What should I do prior to a HydraFacial?

  • Discontinue using Isotretinoin products like Accutane for 6 months before your treatment (unless given clearance by an aesthetician or doctor)

  • Refrain from waxing 48 hours before the treatment

What are the HydraFacials aftercare?

  • Avoid sun exposure as well as the use of tanning beds for about 72 hours after your treatment
  • Wash your face the following morning only
  • Refrain from waxing for 48 hours after the treatment
  • Avoid deep chemical or resurfacing treatment or peels
  • Avoid laser treatments
  • Refrain from using exfoliating products
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas and intense cardio sessions 24 hours after the treatment

HydraFacial by Prive Aesthetics

Body Contouring Treatment
Prive Aesthetics

We tried out the celebrity famous, Hydrafacial treatment at Prive Aesthetics and shared our thoughts.

1. Cleanse + Peel

The first step was a manual cleanse by the aesthetician herself. With a soothing face and neck massage. The double cleansing worked well even though we have done a thorough cleaning prior to the facial.

The vacuum from the Hydra Facial wand allowed the skin to soften and exfoliated but did not leave it dry. Exfoliation occurs via an acid and physical exfoliation from the tip of the wand

2.Extraction + Hydrate

The extraction process uses a different tip that not just softens sebum and sucks blackheads and whiteheads. At the same time, redness or pain is not experienced and the skin remains calmed and soothed by moisturisers.

3. Fuse + Protect

At the last stage of the treatment, intense and rejuvenating Hydra Facial, approved serums are used to elevate the facial for immediate results. At Prive Aesthetics, they use ZO Skin Health, a dermatologist-recommended brand. The combined effects of this machine + ZO serums provide the perfect facial treatment for all skin types and concerns.

ZO Skin Health Bright Alive

Brightalive is a non-retinol-based brightener that lessens discolouration while rejuvenating pores. This product works best on hyper-pigmentation as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Harnessing the power of enzymes Brightalive exfoliates and calms skin.

This serum is specifically designed to work with the Hydrafacial machine to deliver maximum effect without downtime or adverse side effects.

Our Verdict:

Pros:

  • No Downtime
  • Effects Similar to Microdermabrasion
  • Painless
  • Effects can be seen immediately
  • For all skin types- including sensitive skin

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Still need for manual extraction of more stubborn blackheads

The Conclusion? We Love It!

It is rare that we find something that works as quickly and effectively in just 1 session. Hydra facials are definitely on the pricier side ranging from $150-$300 depending on which clinic you go to. However, if you’re keen to try out the effects for yourself we are certain you will not be disappointed.

We immediately understood why this was the most popular facial treatment worldwide. Just a note of caution: do make sure that the clinic you are attending is a Hydrafacial-certified facial salon as some salons in Singapore have been known to use machines that are not the real thing.
