Cetearyl alcohol is a combination of two components namely fatty acid and alcohol. It was discovered by Michel Chevreul, a French chemist, in 1817 while experimenting with heated sperm whale oil. He noticed that once the substance had cooled, it left behind flaky residues. However, the current formulation is based on botanical extracts such as palm oil, soy oil, and coconut oil. It can be found in a variety of beauty products such as moisturisers, makeup, fragrance, lotions, shampoos, and creams.
It delivers several benefits to the skin and is regarded as safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel.
It is compatible with all ingredients, hence it can be paired with other beauty products. However, you should avoid ceteareth-20 because the combination of the two ingredients can be comedogenic. This ingredient can also be too irritating for those with sensitive skin.
It is suitable for all skin types, however, if you have an existing allergy, you should consult your doctor.
