Beauty of Joseon went viral in 2022 for their Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics sunscreen, and for good reason; that sunscreen is a banger. But what about their other products? I’ve actually tried a bunch of other products from them, like the Dynasty Cream and the Ginseng Essence Water. But today, we’re talking about their Calming Serum with Green Tea & Panthenol.

Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum : Green Tea + Panthenol

Ingredients

The Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol by Beauty of Joseon is formulated with 50% green tea, 5% panthenol, as well as 30% mugwort. All three ingredients have incredible anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the skin, reduce any redness, and generally just helps to reduce any sort of irritation.

To go into detail, green tea contains vitamin E, which is amazing at repairing skin. This means that it helps to repair skin that’s been damaged by UV rays, ie dark spots and blemishes. Green tea also has vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, which balances the skin tone and the natural oils in the skin, making it a great ingredient for dry and acne-prone skin.

Apart from that, the Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol also has, well, panthenol that converts into vitamin B5 when it’s absorbed into the skin. This is an amazing ingredient that really hydrates the skin, as it really reduces transepidermal water loss, which means that water doesn’t leave the skin as easily. Not only that, panthenol is also great at reducing inflammation and helping wounds heal faster as it improves the skin barrier function.

Lastly, this serum contains mugwort, which contains a compound called artemisinin. Artemisinin has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which is great for reducing irritation and inflammation. This is a wonderful ingredient for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Texture

The first thing I noticed is that it’s very watery so it’s really easy to spread across the skin. It’s also really lightweight, and absorbs really quickly into the skin. I’ve found that it layers really well with my other skincare products as well, and doesn’t cause anything to pill. Also, not a texture thing but more of a sensory thing; it’s not fragranced, so it’s actually great for sensitive skin, unlike some other products that claim to be for sensitive skin but have fragrance.

How to Use

I tend to only use serums at night, as I keep things very basic in the morning. I’ll typically layer this serum in between my toner and my moisturiser, and as it sinks in really fast, I can immediately go in with my moisturiser once I’ve applied the serum without waiting for it to dry.

Review

Two things you need to know about me: 1) I am allergic to cats. 2) I have cats. Which means that my skin is constantly, and I mean constantly, itchy and red. So worth it, though. I also have dry skin, so I like using serums that are hydrating.

The first thing I noticed about this serum is how watery and lightweight it is, and how quickly it absorbs into my skin. I also like how it feels on the skin; it’s not sticky and it doesn’t leave a film on the skin.

However, that’s pretty much all I have to say about the product. It’s not revolutionary in any way, and I don’t think that it helps much with calming my redness or irritation. I don’t find it to be very hydrating, either. It just makes me want to try out other serums. You could say that it’s not really a product I would bring with me to a deserted island, no matter how sunburnt I get.

Overall, I think it’s mid. Like it’s just ok, it’s nothing special. But I am interested in trying the other serums from Beauty of Joseon, so there might be another review on that.
