If you are considering this treatment, here’s what you need to know.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is also called Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). It is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. You can get a microneedling treatment done by a dermatologist or an aesthetician at a beauty clinic. Additionally, you can also do it at home. It involves rolling a roller with tiny needles along the skin. A Dermapen or a Dermaroller are the tools used in microneedling.

The needles in the Dermarollers or Dermapen produces micropunctures in the skin. Hence, enhancing the absorption of skincare products, causing an increase in the production of collagen. Finally, reducing fine lines and scarring caused by acne.

What are the tools used for Microneedling?

The tools used for microneedling are the Dermaroller or Dermapen/Micropen.

Dermapen / Micropen

Dermapen / Micropen- microneedling tool

The Dermapen or Micropen is an upgrade to the traditional dermaroller. This Dermapen is cordless and is a handheld device that has a disposable tip which is equipped with very fine needles. It is powered by a small motor and the needles then penetrate the skin vertically. Usually, a dermatologist or aesthetician will use a Dermapen at a beauty clinic.

Dermaroller

Dermaroller- microneedling tool

The Dermaroller is a handheld tool equipped with a rolling drum lined with thin and fine needles. This Dermaroller is rolled across the skin. It allows the needles to puncture the epidermis. Hence, creating micro-injuries that helps stimulate the skin’s natural process of healing. Usually, the Dermaroller is used by those who do the microneedling treatment at home. However, some aestheticians do also use Dermarollers in their beauty salons.

What are the advantages of Microneedling?

  • Reduces wrinkles and fine lines. Microneedling stimulates the production of natural collagen and elastin. Hence, reducing wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Improves and lightens scars. Microneedling diminishes the look of acne and surgery scars. The procedure breaks down old tissue and triggers the production of new collagen and elastin. It results in healthier and glowing skin.
  • Prevents signs of aging. As it prevents new wrinkles and fine lines, it also helps stop early signs of ageing. Additionally, combine it with antioxidant serums, it brightens your skin. In other words, giving you a youthful and radiant glow.
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation and evens skin tone. Microneedling reduces the growth of keratinocytes. Plus, it also increases the expression of matrix metalloproteinases.

What are the Side Effects of Microneedling?

Although many people swear by microneedling, there are several side effects that have been linked to this cosmetic procedure. Hence, it is significantly important that you are truly informed of the risks when you undergo any procedures. Among the potential after-effects that you may experience for several weeks after the treatment are listed down below:

  • Inflammation, irritation and itchiness are the common signs for those with sensitive skin
  • Brown spots of melanin
  • Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE)
  • Other common skin damages may occur like bleeding, flaking, redness, tightness, and peeling

What is the procedure of microneedling at a clinic?

  1. First, the anaesthetician will use topical anaesthesia on the area of the face that will last for a period of 45 minutes to an hour.
  2. After preparing the face, the aesthetician will start with the needling in a vertical, horizontal and oblique direction. This is to cover the entire face.
  3. Sometimes, pinpoint bleeding may occur. However, it is easily controllable.
