Limp, greasy hair? It happens to everyone. Even if you don’t really have oily hair product build up can upset your scalp’s PH balance. Trace amounts of dry shampoo, styling products and creamy conditioners cling to your hair and clog your hair follicles. But the solution may be right in your kitchen. Try these DIY scalp scrubs that will bring back your hair’s bounce and beauty!

Sugar and honey scrub for split ends and thinning hair

Mix 2 tablespoons each of brown or muscovado sugar, honey, and coconut oil. Extra virgin olive oil works, too! If you have a Vitamin E capsule, break it and squeeze it into the mix. Or, add a few drops of any f ace oil that has Vitamin E!

Honey is a great ingredient for DIY scalp scrubs. It strengthens your hair strands and helps reverse the damage from heat styling and sun exposure. The coconut oil is moisturizing and is full of antioxidants that help nourish your scalp. And sugar is a popular exfoliant, even in DIY face scrubs.

Oatmeal DIY Scalp Scrub for itchy scalp

When your scalp is itchy and flaky, you may have a slight skin irritation — either from a reaction to chemicals in styling products, or overexposure to the sun. (Yes, your scalp can get sunburned, too.)

Try this soothing DIY scalp scrub. Just mix 2 tablespoons each of brown sugar, finely ground oatmeal, and your hair conditioner. Oatmeal gently sloughs off dead skin cells and has healing properties to calm skin irritation. Use a conditioner that doesn’t have parabens or sulfates.

DIY Sea Salt Hair Scrub for dandruff

Mix two tablespoons of sea salt, two tablespoons of lemon juice, and two tablespoons of olive oil. The salt and lemon have natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal that can fight bacteria that cause dandruff. The olive oil has antioxidants that strengthen your scalp and your hair. Plus: your hair will have a naturally fresh citrus scent!

Baking Soda Scalp Scrub for Greasy Hair

Just mix a big handful of baking soda and a few drops of tea tree oil into your shampoo! The baking soda soaks up the grease (it’s a key ingredient in many dry shampoos) and helps rebalance your scalp PH levels. Tea tree oil can help control oil production — which is why it’s found in a lot of acne skincare products!

Clarifying Apple Cider DIY Scalp Scrub

Apple cider breaks down the build-up in your hair and scalp. You can actually mix a few teaspoons of apple cider into a pail of water and use it as a DIY hair rinse, but if you add other ingredients it’s an effective scrub. Just mix two tablespoons brown sugar, one tablespoon coconut oil, and one teaspoon apple cider vinegar.
