Find the best mask for your skin type

Face masks are the perfect beauty treat. The ingredients work magic on your skin while you literally sit back and relax. But whether you go to a spa, or decide to buy one and apply it from the comforts of your home, you have to pick a face mask that’s right for your skin type. Here’s what to look for.

Dry skin

Your skin needs extra moisture, so go for creamy formulas with ingredients that help your skin retain water (such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, Vitamin E and olive oil). Apply liberally all over the face and on the neck. If you have combination skin, avoid the oiliest areas like the T-zone.

Acne-prone skin

Look for salycylic acid, an anti-inflammatory ingredient that also helps gently exfoliate and clean out the pores of any pimple-causing dirt or oil plugs. However, use face masks just once a week, since you don’t want to irritate the skin (especially if you’re using a strong acne product).

Red, sensitive skin

Aloe vera, chamomile, cucumber and green tea can all soothe irritated, sensitive skin. We particularly like cooling face masks. Aside from these calming ingredients, the temperature gives quick relief and can temporarily reduce puffiness.

Fine lines

Glycolic acid, retinol and peptides are all trusted anti-aging ingredients. A mask can’t replace or do the work of an entire regimen, though (you’ll need a day cream, serum and night cream for a total and thorough wrinkle defense) but a face mask can temporarily plump and smoothen skin. Try applying before a big event, or to complement your existing skincare routine.
