‘Aegyo Sal’ is one of the famous makeup trends in the world of K-beauty, if not the most famous. This word refers to the surgical intervention of infusing fatty deposits or fillings along the undereye region to make it seem wider. So in short, an Aegyo Sal makeup is frequently used to create eye effects that seem bigger or “pop” in an appealing way.

This beauty fad, which started in Korea has now spread to other countries like Japan and Singapore. And even TikTok beauty influencers have come out with their own versions of Aegyo Sal to obtain the attractive “double eyelid”.

For this article, Beauty Insider will dive deeper into the realm of Aegyo Sal and look at the ways on how you can get the bigger eye effect. Let’s master this yet another beauty trend without having to undergo invasive surgery.

What is Aegyo Sal Makeup?

Many of us feel self-conscious about our eye bags. After all, we were repeatedly reminded that puffy under eyes are undesirable. However, this Korean beauty craze views puffy under eyes as a positive; they should be accentuated and enhanced. So for those who are new with Aegyo Sal, it is an under eye fat appearance that seems to pop out when you laugh or smile.

The key is to highlight the puffy area below the lower waterline. This is intriguing because lumps under the eyes are frequently noticed as a result of tension or age. However, the aegyo sal makeup style makes you appear younger for some reason. It’s been a fashionable fad since the 1990s to highlight those pockets of fat. This trend was also popular in Japan in the 2000s, as it  appears to provide a sweet, innocent, and doll-like appearance.

The Aegyo Sal style used to be more intense though, with a wide line of fake under, aggressive contour, and shimmer. However, the style has recently revived in a more elegant and natural-looking version, while still providing a youthful appearance and the illusion of larger eyes.

How to create Aegyo Sal?

It’s easy to achieve the aegyo sal appearance. The first step in achieving this appearance is sculpting the pudge using brown or grey coloured shadows that match your skin tone.

Next, put on a grin to observe and find where the bulging component of this pudge is. Begin by highlighting the inner corners of your eyes with a neutral, shimmering highlighter. Consider colours like champagne, pale gold, or white.  You may also take it up a level and go directly with shimmery. The final stage is blending them well, to ensure that the contour and highlight hues are smoothly mixed.

For people who do not have obvious under-eye fat, draw the contour lower down to produce a thicker, puffier region. ANDA, a Korean makeup artist, has a method in which she squints her eyes slightly to make her aegyo sal visible. She then develops a little wider space beneath her eyes than her natural under eye fat, which complements her facial characteristics and makes her eyes appear larger.

Eyebags Vs. Aegyo Sal

The Aegyo Sal effect is not the same as getting bags under your eyes from sleep deprivation. The first is adorable and fashionable, and it is related to the act of smiling. The second just gives the impression that you are anxious or stressed.

The two have distinct visual distinctions. Eyebags protrude farther behind your lower eyelid than Aegyo Sal. Dark shadows or eye bags fall as deep as nasal cavities, while the beauty trend falls just below the lash line.

The key distinctions between them are in both area and appearance—Aegyo Sal is a childish puffiness, whereas eye bags are simply black and lower-reaching. In reality, eye bags frequently have the inverse result, making you appear much older.
