Fact: age spots aren’t caused by age, but sun exposure. They just tend to appear in the 40s or 50s because of accumulated sun damage, but if you’re always out in the sun or are prone to pigmentation (which is very common for Asians!) then you can get them in your 30s!

New technology like the Q-switch Laser Treatment can treat age spots, but as with all skin concerns it’s best to prevent them from happening. The Clifford Clinic gives tips on how to protect your skin from age spots and other pigmentation problems.

Wear your sunscreen – religiously!

Yes you’ve heard about the importance of sun protection, but most women only put the “bare minimum” and think they’re safe even if they’re not. Common mistakes are applying less than the recommended amount, and forgetting to reapply after 3 or 4 hours. Women also tend to assume that getting SPF in their makeup can replace sunscreen. Remember that only put a little dot of foundation or BB cream which is then spread or blotted into a thin layer – that’s not enough to shield your skin!

Wear sunscreen and then see SPF-enriched beauty products as additional protection. Also avoid direct sun exposure between 11 am to 3pm, and wear hats with a 4-inch wide brim when you’re at the beach.

Take your antioxidants

When ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin, they create unstable molecules called free radicals that “bounce” against skin cells and damage them. Antioxidants bind with these molecules and neutralize them. You can get these from a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, and through your skincare.

Don’t use home remedies

When you see sun spots, don’t try those DIY beauty remedies like lemon juice that supposedly “bleach” or lighten the area. These are acidic and can dry out or irritate your skin, especially if it’s already sensitive from sun exposure. Either use a special cream for pigmentation, which can help fade lighter spots. Some skin-lightening ingredients are tretinoin, hydroquinine, and Vitamin C derivatives.

Treat dark spots and age spots with the Q-switch laser

The Q-switch laser uses heat technology to break down the pigments in age spots, freckles and other pigmentation problems. This heat is released in extremely fast pulses so your skin isn’t overexposed to the heat. Other possible options are chemical peels and microneedling, but each has their pros and cons. It’s best to seek the advice of trained and experienced aesthetic doctor who can look at your overall skin health, your budget, and skin sensitivity before recommending any treatment.
