Ever since the pandemic started, there has been an incredible surge of people dyeing their hair! Mostly, people are dyeing and bleaching their hair on their own at home without professional supervision! Now, this could go two ways, and we are pretty sure everyone has seen those results on youtube. In fact, we are pretty sure that youtube and Tick Tock are the reason this whole at-home salon gig happened! We know, it can be extremely tempting when you see a DIY hair transformation and convince yourself that you can achieve that too. Well, sometimes it does work out! And you get beautifully dyed hair that’ll last you 3 months tops, depending on the colour. Although there is a small percentage of it completely ruining your hair…but life’s about taking risks right! So Beauty Insider is actively encouraging you to take that risk and dye your hair…PINK!

Why Dye Your Hair Pink?

Why should you dye your hair pink? The real question is why not! Are you tired of your boring, plain, black hair? Well, this is the time you should be changing up your look! In fact, you should have been experimenting with your hair ever since the pandemic started! This is the best time because even if you mess up, not many people will see it since you’ll be stuck at home anyway. So, no big deal! The reason everyone is dyeing their hair pink right now, is because the bright and vibrant shades of pink boost a sense of happiness and hopefulness. Something everyone needs during this time.

The trending pink hair also exudes whimsical feelings in your life and even makes you feel calm somehow. Other than that, dyeing your hair a different colour in general, makes you happy and excited for change! So, which shade of pink are you going for? But before that, you need to know what you are getting yourself into!

Things You Should Know

Now, before you dive into any sort of dyeing or dye for your hair, you should know what you need to do before and after. The obvious one is to do your research before you start randomly dyeing your hair! Most of the time, failed hair transformations come from people either not reading instructions or not doing research beforehand. It’s a big change you know, and you want it to look as good as possible! Not a hot mess.

Research

When we say research, we mean it! Binge every hair transformation video on youtube there is and watch professional tips as well! If you’ve been watching Brad Mondo, then great! You’ll know exactly what not to do to end up on his Youtube channel! Besides that, find out where you can get your hair dye or bleach, (if you are planning on bleaching) and make sure you can get extra! For people with long and thick hair, we suggest getting extra of everything. Trust us, you’ll need it.

You’ll also want to know where to get your specific hair colour, or if they don’t sell it, how to make your hair colour. We’ve seen many try to mix and DIY their own hair colour and it could be risky! Make sure you know all the steps of bleaching and dyeing too before starting. You don’t want to panic halfway because you’ve realised you left the bleach on for too long!

What Colour is Your Natural Hair?

While some people look at their natural hair colour and go, “what colour will blend and not need bleaching?”, others might think “I don’t care how bright the colour is, I must achieve it”! Yeah, some people might be brave enough to bleach their own hair, but others might not think so. It’s totally up to your own preferences and depending on that, you can decide what shade of pink is most suitable for you. If your natural hair colour is dark like brown or black, then pastel and vibrant pinks might not show up. You might be better suited with pinks that are much darker and lean towards a reddish tone. Since your natural hair is dark, the colour will be dark as well.

If you have blonde or light ginger hair, then pastel and vibrant colours are right up your alley! You can save yourself from the damage of bleaching and get straight into slathering the colour on! No wonder most of us envy blondes! But if you desperately want that pastel pink or bright pink to show, then you have to bleach your hair. We know it sounds daunting, but we all have to make sacrifices for beautiful hair!

Always Do A Test Strand!

Now, this is a professional tip that many tend to ignore! Before dyeing or bleaching your hair, ALWAYS. DO. A. TEST. STRAND. This step is crucial as it helps identify if your hair is suitable for bleach and hair dyes. If you’ve dyed your hair before, it is even more important to do a test strand because the colour you want may clash with the colour you already have and produce an entirely different colour like an icky green! You don’t want that, do you?

Doing a test strand before bleaching also helps identify if your hair will suffer from any breakage or if it changes colour during bleaching. Like we said, if you have a previous colour on your hair, regardless of it being dark or bright, stripping that colour may lead to very shocking results. Black box dyed hair, for example, might bleed out when bleached, but leave you with greens and purples.

Know That The Process Is Long

The one thing people seem to always doubt when it comes to dyeing their hair pink, or any colour, is how long it takes. On Youtube, you see videos that are 5 minutes, 20 minutes long. But you have to remember that all those videos go through editing and most parts have been cut out! In reality, depending on what you are doing to your hair, the duration it takes may vary.

If you aren’t doing any bleaching, then you’ll save yourself quite a lot of time. Without bleaching, you may expect maybe an hour or less. But if you are bleaching your hair, boy are you in for a ride. If your natural hair colour is super dark like black and dark brown, then you’ll either need to wake up super early to finish it in a day, or split it into two to three days. Dark hair tends to need at least 2 rounds of bleaching for it to get light enough so that pastel colours will show. That will take a lot of work, especially if you have long hair!

Your Undertones Could Decide Your Colour

Your skin tone also plays an important role in how your hair colour will show. Whether it looks good on you or not! Similar to buying clothes, you can’t expect something on a mannequin to look the same as when you try it on. The same goes for your hair! That warm and vibrant pink hair colour you saw on Instagram, might not look as good on you. If your skin tone is on the warmer side, then you should choose a pink shade with a similarly warm tone. A pink that leans more towards orange and yellow. If you have a cool skin tone, then you might want to consider magenta or fuchsia hues of pink! These pink hair colours tend to have violet and blue bases as well.

The Upkeep of Pink Hair

You should know that if you are going to dye your hair pink, it will fade extremely quickly too. Unless you don’t mind it fading in a month, you should try to maintain a good hair care routine. Using the right conditioner, shampoo and even a hair mask once a week can help keep your pink hair looking vibrant and new! Pink is a high maintenance colour, so if you want it to stick, you need to take good care of it. Of course, if you dyed your hair pink in hopes of it fading to a very pretty pastel pink, then be our guest. Wash your hair as many times as you want so that it fades!

There is no right or wrong in how you take care of your coloured hair. Do what makes you happy! Besides, fading pink hair from a dark and warm flamingo to a light pastel pink makes you look magical! What’s more, is that you can kind of have more than one hair colour at once with the fading! The best thing is you can control the fading depending on how often you wash your hair, top up the colour and pamper it!
