David Loh Surgery was founded in the year 2002 with the aim of focusing on aesthetic procedures involving little or no downtime. They have two branches in which one is located in Wheelock Place and the other in Novena Medical Center.

Dr David Loh is usually the one based at the Wheelock Place clinic. He is also accredited by the MOH to perform liposuction. Other than liposuction, he also specialises in Botox and Fillers.

On the other hand, Dr Phoon Yi Shan is based at the clinic in Novena Medical Centre. There, she takes the lead in Nano-fat grafting, cullulite subcision, as well as general aesthetics like IPL, Botox, Fillers, Lasers and Coolsculpting.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical method to sculpt the figure by evening out unproportioned areas of the body or face. This procedure involves extracting pockets of fat using a tiny hole in the skin and using a thin cannula to contour and shape the area.

Parts of the body such as saddlebags, love handles or the belly that is not in sync with the rest of the body are usually the areas for liposuction. However, any part of the body from the face to the ankle can be contoured.

How does Liposuction work?

There are 3 stages to a liposuction procedure.

First Stage – Prior to the liposuction, sedation is administered by an anaesthetist. Then tumescent anaesthesia is injected into the areas that are going to be treated. Tumescent anaesthesia reduces bleeding during the liposuction procedure and improves the comfort of the patient when they regain consciousness.

Second Stage – The fat deposits are loosened before suction. Dr David Loh uses high-frequency sound waves to loosen the fats. This method is also called Vaser-assisted liposuction. “Vaser” stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Vaser is one of several methods of power-assisted liposuction.

Third Stage – Suction. The doctor inserts the cannula under the skin to remove the fat cells. This is how the name “liposuction” came about. Movement of the cannula, which is attached to a low power suction, removes the fat from areas treated. The endpoint of the liposuction is achieved when the desired shape is visible.

How do I know if I am eligible to have a Liposuction done?

Well, technically, there no such thing as an ideal patient. Even if you are a smoker or you have mild hypertension, you can still get liposuction done. All you need to keep in mind is that your healing process would be slower than a person who does not smoke or have hypertension. Also, if you do have Diabetes, it should be treated properly before the liposuction procedure.

However, if you are still concerned, the team of doctors and nurses are very experienced anaesthetists who will be able to handle your special requests.

How do you prepare yourself for the Liposuction?

Before the procedure, discuss with your doctor on what to expect from the liposuction. You would also need to understand the potential risks of the procedure along with how they can be minimised along with the recovery process.

The doctor will also ask you about your medical conditions and if you are on any medication. This is to see if your medication will have effects on your procedure.

How long does the liposuction procedure take?

The Liposuction procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours. However, the more areas that need treatment, the longer the time. This is not inclusive of the preparation time at the beginning and the time that the patient takes to come out of sedation. Therefore, a rough estimation of the total time that will be spent in a day surgery is around 4 to 5 hours.

Usually, a compression garment is provided to those who just had liposuction. This garment is to be worn for the first two weeks when the bruising and swelling is on the way up.

The next day after liposuction, a nurse will change the dressing of the patient and teach them how to change the dressing subsequently. Additionally, radio-frequency massage treatments are done for 7 days post-liposuction. This is to help reduce the swelling faster.
