Taking a leaf from Beyonce and J-Lo, fillers for male bottoms are becoming a trend here. Known as buttocks augmentation, it can help change the shape of flat buttocks to a more desirable, rounder shape. A&B gets to the bottom of this with Dr Elias Tam of EHA Clinic.

The slim look is the “in-thing” at the moment and a well-rounded bottom is essential to carry it off. Improving the posterior by Macrolane is suitable for any fit young person, male or female, who is not overweight and has no medical problem.

Why do men come to you for buttocks augmentation?

Just like women, men want to look good and feel good too. Men are beginning to realise that, all things being equal, a better-looking person tends to perform better in life. They usually earn a higher salary and get promoted faster than their average-looking counterparts. The slim look is the “in-thing” at the moment and a well-rounded bottom is essential to carry it off.

What is the general profile of the men you have treated?

Most of the men that I have treated are fit and toned but just lack a defined posterior. They are usually between the age of 20 to 40 years and have tried exercising but are unable to improve the area sufficiently, or they may just find exercising too tough to maintain and prefer an easier option to look their best. Some just feel too conscious of their flat posterior and become shy to go to the gym. Interestingly, after the procedure, they recover
their confidence and start to go to the gym to maintain the results further through exercise.

Who is a suitable candidate for this treatment?

Improving the posterior by Macrolane is suitable for any fit young person, male or female, who is not overweight and has no medical problem.

What is the procedure like?

A numbing solution is first used to infuse the area for treatment. Once ready, the Macrolane is injected gently to achieve the desired shape.

Are these fillers permanent and what are they made of

Macrolane is not permanent. It is made up of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is present in our own tissue, and will be absorbed over a period of time.

What other areas can be enhanced or shaped with this kind of filler?

It can also be used to enhance the chest area for men and to cover defects over the thigh or arm due to injury or
even to cover any natural deficit on the body.

Are there any side effects?

Like all procedures, there may be some bruising and swelling plus a small risk of infection or allergic reaction. These are usually temporary and mild.
