Chin fillers may get as much beauty buzz as noselifts or Botox, but this non-invasive treatment can make a big difference in your facial shape and appearance. “Optimizing the chin helps to create definition in the lower third of the face. When injected in combination with the cheeks and jawline, it can create the desirable heart-shaped face,” says US cosmetic doctor Dr. Jane Leonard.

Dr. Jessie Cheung compares the chin filler to one of the most popular selfie poses: chin tilted up towards the camera. By making your chin more prominent, your neck looks longer, and your jaw looks more defined. So just like finding the most flattering photo angle, thinner, a chin filler can balance your features to make you slimmer and even younger.

Dr. Cheung adds that a chin filler can also correct facial proportions. “The chin is one of the central pillars of the face,” she said.  A small chin can accentuate your nose, or a saggy chin can weaken your jawline.

How do chin fillers work?

Most chin fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which adds volume to the area where it’s injected. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural protein that can be found in our bodies, it is safely absorbed.

Who can get chin filler?

Anyone who wants a better profile can consider getting this non-invasive facial contouring treatment. Here are some possible benefits you can get:

Anti-ageing

As we grow older, we lose muscle and bone mass, and our collagen and elastin levels drop too. This leads to jowls and saggy necks. “Envision a collapsing tent pole—if we put the tent pole back into place, the tent will smooth out,” says Dr. Cheung.

Aside from adding more definition to the jawline, chin fillers can even help correct the frowning/downturning of the lip muscles that can give you an angry appearance.

V-Shape

For some women, the V-shape shape (slender, with a pointed and well-defined chin) is a beauty ideal. If you have round face or chubby cheeks, chin fillers can balance out your features to create that V-face.

Weak or receding chin

If your chin appears small or short compared to the rest of your face, it can affect your entire profile. Your lips can look large or protrude, or your neck or nose may look too prominent. Chin fillers can help balance your facial features for a more symmetrical, flattering silhouette.

What happens during the treatment?

A chin filler treatment usually takes about 30 minutes. The doctor injects dermal filler into the chin. The number and placement of injections depend on your facial shape and the look you are aiming to achieve.

How long do results last?

Fillers usually last from 9 to 12 months.

Are chin fillers painful?

The discomfort depends on your own pain threshold and the contour or facial shape you want. Fillers that are injected deep and near the bone will be more painful than those in “fleshier” parts of the face. However, you will be given topical numbing creams to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

What are the side effects and downtime?

You may have some swelling and bruising for a few days, and your chin may feel a bit sore and heavy. Chin fillers take a while to “settle” so it is best to avoid any activity (like sports, exercise) where your face may get hit. Some doctors also recommend avoid hard chewing, which will move many of the lower facial muscles. You can still continue to eat, but choose food that is softer or can be cut into bite-sized pieces.
