A keloid, also known as a keloid scar, is an inflated scar caused by an excessively aggressive wound-healing response. They’re thicker and more raised than normal scars, and can occur anywhere there’s an injury. Common areas where you can get keloid scars are the earlobes after getting a piercing, shoulders, cheeks, or the chest. You may even get a keloid scar after getting surgery. Although keloid scars won’t affect your physical health, it can be unsightly. That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of where to get keloid scar removal treatments in Singapore, so you can finally regain your confidence.

Scars are a natural part of the healing process after a wound, such as a cut or a small burn. Usually,  scars will fade and reduce over time, but in some situations, the skin may overreact to the injury, leading to overgrown scars. In the medical field, these scars are known as keloids.

What is a Keloid Scar?

Let’s break it down a little. When the skin is wounded, a fibrous tissue known as scar tissue emerges over the injury area to mend and shield it. Under certain situations, excess scar tissue arises, culminating in thick, hard growths termed keloids.

Keloids are most commonly found on the earlobes, shoulders, chest, and joints, and they can occur as a result of skin problems, piercings, or surgeries. It may arise in more than one area in persons who are vulnerable to lesions. The later it gets treated, the trickier to treat the scar, thus stressing the importance of prevention or early treatment.

Keloid scars are thick and inconsistent, and they rarely heal on their own. This type of scar can be difficult to treat which is the reason dermatologists stress the need of avoiding any potential injury that might develop into keloids.

Keloids are not a risk to your health, but they can bring aesthetic issues. Keloid scars generally thick, and are raised above the skin.

Symptoms of a Keloid Scar

  • Growth
Keloids can gradually grow in the span of three to 12 months, or more; however, usually, the symptom will surface within a year of the initial skin damage. Some keloids may also double in size in a short amount of time.
  • Scars that are itchy, sensitive, or stinging
These reactions can be quite frustrating for certain people.
  • Easily irritated
It might become inflamed as a consequence of friction, such as rubbing against fabric.
  • Colour change
A keloid is a scar that begins rosy, reddish, or blood-coloured and blackens over time, eventually seeming darker compared to the skin generally.

Types Of Keloid Scar Removal Treatments In Singapore

Home Remedy

Prior to visiting any surgical treatments, consider trying at-home cures. You can purchase nourishing oils, treatment lotions, or silicone gel to help keep the tissue supple. These may aid in reducing the keloid without exacerbating it. The scar will usually be flattened after six months of using these at-home remedies daily. Even without treatment, keloids tend to diminish and flatten with time.

Steroid Injection

Steroid injection is the most often used treatment for keloid scars. This anti-inflammatory medication, when injected into the scar, aids in the reduction of the lesion. Patients are generally given a round of injections every three to four weeks and are then discharged. The initial treatments usually ease discomfort while also flattening the keloid. 60% to 80% of keloids disappear after treatment.

Laser Keloid Removal Treatment

This treatment might cause a keloid’s height to decrease and its colour to fade. It is frequently used in conjunction with other procedures such as steroid injections or pressure.

The specialist may advise laser treatment for specific types of scars. This treatment uses high-powered laser beams to exfoliate the keloid and surrounding skin, leaving a softer, more balanced look.

However, there is a potential risk that this treatment will aggravate the keloid by intensifying inflammation and swelling. Patients should still anticipate residual scarring.

Keloid Surgery

Surgical removal may be suggested in the instance of a particularly large keloid or if it’s an aged keloid scar.

The surgical treatment of keloids carries the chance of keloids regenerating. Almost all keloids resurface following this surgery. Additional keloid treatments are essential to lessen the chance of a keloid resurfacing after surgical removal.

The most successful type of keloid surgery is probably cryosurgery treatment. The keloid is “frozen” using liquid nitrogen during the treatment. Following surgery, the surgeon may suggest corticosteroid injections to reduce swelling and the likelihood of the keloid reappearing.

Pressure Dressing

Applying pressure on the keloid reduces blood circulation, which can help avoid recurrence. After keloid surgery, 90% to 100% of patients who adhere to the procedures can prevent recurring keloid. However, getting this treatment might be challenging as these devices are usually not quite comfortable.

Is Getting a Keloid Scar Removal Treatment Painful?

Don’t worry if you have a low pain tolerance! Scar removals are usually painless for the majority of people. To maximise comfort, anaesthetic medication is normally given 30 to 45 minutes before the laser treatment. If steroid injections are required, they might feel like ant sting. But, as the scar heals, the following treatments are usually less painful.

How to Prevent Keloids

If you sustain any type of skin injury, seek immediate wound treatment. Gently clean the wounded area with soap and water. Then, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the injury to keep it moisturised. This is because moisturisers can aid in the restoration of softness and firmness to the skin.
